Max Thorne has five minutes to choose between the godfather who raised him and the fate of the world. His team can transform into dinosaurs. The choice is still his alone.
For older teens and adults who want high-stakes action with real emotional weight, and heroes who earn their strength.
You grew up loving dinosaurs, big adventures and teams that fight for each other, and you've been waiting for a story that takes all of that seriously.
You want an adventure story with genuine emotional stakes, not just explosions, and you keep finishing books that give you one but never both.
You grew up obsessed with dinosaurs and archaeology, but most fiction treats those passions as props rather than the whole magnificent point.
You are tired of young heroes who have no real weight on their shoulders, no grief, no guilt, nothing that makes their choices actually matter.
You want to read about a team where every member counts, not a lone protagonist who solves everything while the others stand and watch.
You love fast, cinematic action but you need the quiet human moments too, the ones that remind you why the battle was worth fighting at all.
I wrote the book I kept looking for. Chapter 1 is free.
This is how the book opens. Max has less than five minutes, and so do you. Want the rest of the chapter? It's free.
Send me Chapter 1 →The lair was a cathedral of impossible technology.
Soaring overhead, the ceiling stretched into shadow—at least sixty feet high, supported by columns of polished obsidian. The walls hummed with power. Bioluminescent panels cast an eerie blue-green glow, pulsing in rhythm with the machinery. The air tasted metallic, electric. Wrong.
And at the center of it all: the terraforming machine.
And inside the terraforming machine: Dr. Finch.
Max's godfather. The man who'd raised him after his father Harold died. The only parent he had left.
The countdown had already started.
Science fiction adventure · Part dinosaur story, part monster story, part superhero epic
Max Thorne is a twenty-six-year-old archaeology grad student, and the book opens with him inside a cathedral of impossible technology, with the godfather who raised him trapped in a machine and a five-minute countdown running. He can save Dr. Finch, or he can save the world. There is no right answer, only the clock.
How he got there takes the rest of the book: an ancient discovery, a set of crystals that bond to the people who find them, and four friends, Sam, Maya, Emma and Leo, who learn they can transform into an Allosaurus, a Triceratops, an Ankylosaurus and a Pteranodon. Max has to learn that leading them is not about certainty. It is about trusting the people beside you when the clock runs out.
Five individuals. One impossible choice.

EJ Fulbright writes adventure fiction that treats its readers as grown-ups. THE EXTINCT: Reawakening sits where dinosaur mythology, archaeological mystery and the human cost of leading others meet. It follows Max Thorne and his team through a world where Primordial creatures are real, ancient technology is dangerous, and the bonds between people matter more than any superpower.
There have been plenty of dinosaur stories, plenty of monster stories and plenty of superhero stories. EJ could not find one that brought all three together, so he wrote it: an adventure with the thunder of creature transformations, the dread of something ancient waking up, and the quieter ache of a young person pushed into responsibility he never asked for, still carrying grief, still making choices that could break everything he loves.
If you have ever wanted an adventure that takes dinosaurs seriously, honors the people who raised you, and proves that strength is something you build alongside others, THE EXTINCT was written for you.
“Leadership isn’t about being perfect, Max. It’s about making the call when no one else will, and then doing everything in your power to get it right.”— THE EXTINCT: Reawakening

No. THE EXTINCT is written for older teens and adults who love imaginative, high-stakes adventure. The emotional complexity, the leadership pressure Max carries and the grief woven through the story are written for readers who want their fiction to treat them as grown-ups, whatever age they happen to be.
Not at all. The world is built from the ground up inside the story. Your love of dinosaurs is an advantage but it is never a requirement. The creatures and the artifacts come to life in a way that works whether you are a lifelong enthusiast or coming to it completely fresh.
It is both, by design. The book opens at a full sprint inside a ticking countdown and never lets the tension drop, but every action beat is grounded in what Max, Sam, Maya, Emma and Leo are feeling and risking. The adventure and the emotional story are the same story, not two separate tracks.
THE EXTINCT: Reawakening is Book One of Max Thorne's story. It tells a complete story with a real ending, and it also lays the foundation for a larger world. You will finish it fulfilled, not stranded.
The stakes are genuinely high and the emotional weight is real. Max carries grief, guilt and fear throughout, and the impossible choice at the center of the story costs something. But the book's promise is ultimately one of hope: that grief can be faced, that teams hold each other up and that the people beside you are the reason the fight is worth having. Expect peril, loss and some intense action scenes. There is no graphic sexual content.
